The yard was empty has Fallon entered. A large black ball of fur slammed into her side on her way to the storage shed. She was knocked flat, landing in a puff of dust.
"Valiant!" Fallon yelled, directing a few choice words toward the large wolf. She'd found him abandoned on a hunting trip a year or so ago. And he acted more like a dog that the dogs did.
He was carrying a log - not a stick, a log - his tail wagging.
"You better hope the cooks feed you tonight, 'cause I sure won't."
Valiant dropped his prize, giving me a wolfy grin.

I threw the log over the fence, watching as the wolf raced after it. Meanwhile, I opened the storage shed, taking out a weighted staff. Metal capped both ends, and it was almost as long as I was tall. Taking a few practice swings, I started a simple practice, working faster and faster until the wood was but a blur.
